چکیده

OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REMSD) for 5 days on depressive-like behavior and monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) expression in the amygdale of mice. METHODS Adult male C57BL/6J mice were divided into blank control group, control group and REMSD group. REMSD models were established by a modified multiple small platform method. The mice were examined for locomotive activity in open field test (OFT) and for depressive-like behavior in forced swimming test (FST) and sucrose preference test (SPT) after treatment. After all the tests, the protein and mRNA expressions of MAOA in the amygdala were detected with Western blotting and real-time PCR, respectively. RESULTS REMSD for 5 days significantly impaired the locomotive activity of the mice, which was obvious in 1 to 3 days after REMSD. The locomotive activity became normal on day 4 after the 5-day REMSD. The immobility time of the mice was lengthened in days 7 to 14 (P<0.01), and sucrose preference rate was reduced significantly in days 8 and 9 (P<0.01). The expression level of MAOA in the amygdala was increased significantly after the 5-day REMSD (P<0.01). CONCLUSION REMSD for 5 days causes delayed depressive-like behavior in mice possible in relation with the increased expression of MAOA in the amygdale.

RAPID EYE MOVEMENT SLEEP DEPRIVATION INDUCES ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE A CTIVITY IN THE PREOPTIC AREA OF THE RAT BRAIN

Acetylcholinesterase (AchE) is a large glycoprotein that, aside from its known cholinolytic activity, co-exists with other transmitter systems and possesses other functions. In the present study, the effects of short-term rapid-eye-movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD) on AchE activity in the anterior hypothalamic area have been investigated. Using the flower-pot method, adult male albino ra...

Effects of REM sleep deprivation during pregnancy on spatial learning of adult male offspring of rats

Introduction: There are several evidences that show various environmental stresses during pregnancy, affect physiological behavior of the offspring. In this study the effects of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep deprivation of pregnant rats on spatial learning of adult male offspring by Morris water maze were investigated. Methods: Water tank technique was used for inducing REM sleep deprivatio...

Sleep Phenotyping in a Mouse Model of Extreme Trait Anxiety

BACKGROUND There is accumulating evidence that anxiety impairs sleep. However, due to high sleep variability in anxiety disorders, it has been difficult to state particular changes in sleep parameters caused by anxiety. Sleep profiling in an animal model with extremely high vs. low levels of trait anxiety might serve to further define sleep patterns associated with this psychopathology. METHO...

Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation induces a decrease in neuronal nuclear volume in the locus coeruleus, hippocampus and cingulated cortex of the rat

Background: Literature findings have suggested that brain morphological changes may underlie behavioral disturbances such as depression. In depressed patients, alteration in the volume of some brain regions were described and in laboratory animals antidepressant treatments change neuronal nuclei volume and axon densities in some brain regions. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation has anti...

Recovery from sleep deprivation occurs during propofol anesthesia.

BACKGROUND Some neurophysiologic similarities between sleep and anesthesia suggest that an anesthetized state may reverse effects of sleep deprivation. The effect of anesthesia on sleep homeostasis, however, is unknown. To test the hypothesis that recovery from sleep deprivation occurs during anesthesia, the authors followed 24 h of sleep deprivation in the rat with a 6-h period of either ad li...
